Abstract

Performances of imported rose varieties were studied under greenhouse conditions in Kuwait. The work focused on testing and standardization of horticultural and management practices for successful rose cultivation in Kuwait. Even though Kuwait is an arid country, roses can be grown successfully here under controlled environmental conditions. Since floriculture is a flourishing business in Kuwait, this new technology can be transferred to growers for cut flower industry thereby increasing their returns. This were taken from each variety of rose cut flower. The plants were planted in five gallon pots filled with a mixture of potting soil: perlite: peat moss in the ratio of 1:1:2. Data on plant height, number of branches and the number of flowers were recorded to evaluate the performance of the varieties. Results indicated that Michele Meilland proved to be the best flower producing variety followed by Kajmunk Paramount. The variety Elfe exhibited the poorest performance in flower production. Regarding plant height Michele Meilland was the tallest followed by Ingrid Bergman. Red Variety showed the shortest stem length. All the varieties except the variety Elfe had created excellent cut flower suitable for bouquets. They produced attractive, fragrant and colorful flowers which were bigger in size and with Evaluating the Suitability of Different Rose Varieties (Rosa indica) Under Greenhouse Conditions in Kuwait 729 long flower stalks so that they can be efficiently used in flower arrangements. The variation shown by different varieties in various parameters can be attributed to varietal character.
