Abstract

In spite of induction motors which to magnetizing current reduction, the air gap length must be very small, for a synchronous motor it is desirable to have a big air gap length. The essential air gap separating rotor from stator greatly influences the performance of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM). To design of an IPM motor, usually there are some values of air gap length within limits instead of a unique value which can be selected. It will be shown that even very small variations of air gap length within permissible limit, have big effects on motor performances, so that it need to additional calculation to knowing and selection of best air gap length. There for, the finite element package, MAXWELL V.10, and simulation toolboxes are employed in the investigation and calculation of magnetic and electrical parameters such as electromagnetic torque, cogging torque and dynamic performance versus the air gap length variations.
